CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

Everything in the universe, from satellites to humans, has a configuration or relative arrangement of parts which are constantly changing.  Effective management of these parts is called Configuration Management (CM).  It is impossible to have quality, cost and schedule integrity, or closed-loop change control without CM.  For that reason the ISO standards and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) address the Configuration Management process.

CM, however, still has a long way to go before it becomes a household word.  CM is an enigma to corporate executives.  CM has also been ignored by the academic institutions - few CM courses are taught at the University level, and four year degrees do not exist.

ABOUT CMTF

CMTF is a technical training company specializing in Configuration Management and founded by John Roberts in 1993.  After eleven years of lecturing at Universities, and for other technical training companies, John felt he needed to improve on the learning environment.  The goal was to start a progressive company, one that would actually listen to the comments of speakers and attendees.  Clearly, poor management was everywhere in the industry; bad venues, questionable locations, unqualified speakers with inflated resumes, and all of the other things which do little to enhance the learning experience.  John knew he could do a better job.  The rest is history.

CMTF is the largest Configuration Management training company in the world.  We provide services on five continents.  CMTF has been so successful that we are now expanding into training other processes, primarily software and quality.  Typical attendees come from:

  • Commercial programs seeking an effective change process
  • Enterprises trying to achieve ISO 9000 certification
  • Military Commands seeking "Perry Initiative" compliance and good CM practices
  • Research institutions seeking to implement reasonable CM requirements
  • Software organizations undergoing SEI assessments
  • Programs involved with paperless systems integration
  • Quality organizations seeking an understanding of CM
  • Companies looking for a competitive advantage through certifying their personnel

ABOUT MR. JOHN M. ROBERTS

A leading expert and sought-after speaker, Mr. John M. Roberts has presented over 600 Configuration Management seminars at Universities, to in-house clients, and at public seminars across the U.S., Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, the Middle East, and South Africa.  Thousands of Industry, Defense and Government professionals have benefited from his unique combination of dynamic communication skills, technical knowledge and experience.

Mr. Roberts has over twenty-four years of Configuration Management experience on hundreds of commercial and military projects.  Mr. Roberts is currently President of the Configuration Management Training Foundation (CMTF), and founder/president of the International Society of Configuration Management (ISCM).  Mr. Roberts is known world-wide for his top level executive briefings, and for being the one CM Trainers seek to hear where CM is going in the future.

ABOUT OUR TRAINING

What sets CMTF apart from the other training companies is that with us you get an instructor that is internationally recognized as an expert in CM, with hands-on experience working on hundreds of programs in all industries and Government agencies.  Mr. Roberts understands the whole life-cycle CM process and how it is tailored for unique programs and environments.

With other companies you typically get speakers with little or no real world Configuration Management experience attempting to give someone else's presentation material.  They will have a hard time answering your questions or even stepping out of their narrow understanding and interpretation of the CM process.

One of the benefits of attending a course taught by Mr. Roberts is that he has lectured on-site at various government agencies, military commands, and commercial corporations.  He knows how these enterprises work and implement CM.  Consequently, Mr. Roberts has the knowledge and experience to answer your questions and help you fully grasp the CM process.

Our students come from very diverse backgrounds with all levels of CM experience.  We get students that are new to CM and others have over 20 years experience.  Some actually work in CM and others work in Quality, System Engineering, Maintenance, IT, Data Management or hold an Executive position.  After looking at thousands of positive course evaluations we know that regardless of experience level or job position everyone gets something of value out of our training and will go back to work better equipped to deal with the unique challenges of implementing CM today.

Those new to CM will appreciate how Mr. Roberts teaches the fundamental Configuration Management process, which he has broken down into its seven major elements:

Management Responsibility
Configuration Management Planning
Configuration Management Identification
Configuration Management Control
Software Configuration Management
Configuration Management Status Accounting
Configuration Management Audits

You will learn everything you need to know to work in CM, from setting up and running a CCB, to conducting Configuration audits.

Those with some CM experience will be surprised to learn how much the CM process has expanded over time to include other process such as Data Management, Property Management, Asset and Supply Chain Management, and documenting Technology Infrastructure.

During our lectures various CM tools will be demonstrated, discussed, and evaluated.  We do this to enhance the learning experience.  But we understand that the landscape of the CM tool industry is constantly changing with mergers and buyouts commonplace.  A great tool today may be old technology in three years or simply not available anymore.  Consequently, at CMTF we stress process first then tools.  And for professional and ethical reasons we do not accept any compensation for endorsing a particular tool over another.

Many executives think that by simply acquiring a Life-Cycle Management, PDM, ERP, or Code Management tool that they will have Configuration Management.  Anyone can go out and buy a shop full of woodworking tools, that doesn't make them a carpenter.  Likewise, with CM you need to know which tool is right for you, how to set it up, how to use it, and how to tailor it to fit your particular needs.  Mr. Roberts gives you the workflows and quality gates that must be imbedded in the functionality of your tools and process in order to properly manage your baselines and product configurations from proposal to disposal in accordance with your CM charters and plans and good practices.

Hands-on workshops are conducted at all of our courses.  It is our experience that people tend to remember more of what they do (such as workshops) rather than what they hear.  Workshops reinforce the lectures, help prepare students for certification exams, and facilitate student interaction.  This is an important element of learning. Our classes are frequently filled with attendees from around the world.  It is very informative to hear how others implement Configuration Management.

It is important for everyone to understand that our generation is seeing more change than any other that has walked on the face of the earth.  So it is very critical that we stay current with what is going on in CM and prepare for changes (CM Strategic Inflection Points) that are right around the corner.  That is why Mr. Roberts starts every class with a brief insight into the future and it's impact on Configuration Management.  From the new CM requirements derived from technology such as RFID (GPS tracking of assets), to government information and server audits, on-line change processing, and transforming CSAS into a virtual information portal, it's all covered in our CM training.

ABOUT CERTIFICATION

In addition to our training courses we also have a very successful Configuration Management certification program.  Our certification program is widely accepted as the gold standard for CM certification.  It is not a rubber stamp given at course completion.  You will earn our certification.  Nor is it an exercise in memorizing obsolete standards.  Our exams are based on good industry best practices.  Although optional, we highly recommend certification.  In the absence of college degrees for CM, and in light of the highly competitive job market today, our certification gives you an added advantage.

We now offer three levels of certification:

Level I – CICM, Certified International Configuration Manager
  • A Fundamental-Tier Certification
  • No Prerequisites
  • Exam preparation given in Basic and Advance CM courses
  • Three Hour Exam
  • Interested parties can register to take the CICM Level I Exam on the day following the Advanced Configuration Management training course.  Level I testing starts at 8:00 AM and complete by 11:00 AM.
Level II – CISCM, Certified International Software Configuration Manager

SPONSORS

CMTFdoes not seek University sponsors to legitimize our Configuration Management training and certification program.  Universities do not offer degree programs in Configuration Management.  Shamefully, Engineers, today as in the past, are not required to take a CM course before graduating to the real world.  Paying for sponsorship is fine for some.  At CMTF, however, we feel an endorsement is only credible if the sponsor has knowledge of what they are sponsoring.

We have earned the endorsement of Governments, Corporations, and Project Managers by providing the best training in the world.  If you are considering CM training from our competitors, be aware, chances are they will use material and concepts developed here.  Why get the information second hand?  Come to a CMTF Training Course and hear innovated ideas and practical solutions, in context, from the originator.

Many talk about bridges to the next Millennium.  At CMTF we enable you to design, build and support them.
